Bondi Blog: The Steelers are doomed without an NFL-caliber back-up QB

We had our third-straight winning Saturday with our horse racing selections last week and once again we were in it to win it on the final day of the Travelers Championship in golf.

We hope you will be with us this 4th of July when the Bondi Horse Racing “Steam Team” goes for a fourth-straight winning week!

July is here and that means the return of professional sports begins later this month. In recent Bondi Blog we have already suggested two go-against teams in the NBA and a Major League Baseball team that we expect to be overrated. Today, we present an MLB team that will thrive in the shortened season format and an NFL team that could be in serious trouble.

In the NFL this week, the major news was New England swooping in and signing QB Cam Newton to a one-year deal. It was a brilliant move by Bill Belichick because there is absolutely zero risk and a ton of upside since the Pats will pay him a base salary of $1 million. While there are incentives that could make the former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL MVP another $7 million that would still be a bargain for New England when you consider the Bears sent a 4th round pick to Jacksonville for Nick Foles and will pay him at least $17 million this year. Or how about New Orleans back-up QB Taysom Hill, who could make $21 million this year? When you look at it that way, it’s mind-boggling that other teams weren’t trying to sign Newton, most notably the Steelers.

Only five teams have a higher season win total heading into the season than Pittsburgh, which has been pegged at 9.5, but we find it hard to believe that this team can win 10 games without a healthy Ben Roethlisberger. We saw what happened last year when Big Ben went down. The team was subjected to using Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges at QB and it was a disaster as the Steelers went 8-8 and missed the playoffs. But for some reason, the Steelers had no interest in Newton, but signed Paxton Lynch and JT Barrett and also passed on guys like Jameis Winston and Andy Dalton, who were both signed at bargain rates as QB security by teams with established starters. The Steelers are playing with fire if they are pinning their season’s hopes on Big Ben staying upright and healthy for the entire season.

This is a 38-year-old we’re talking about. He’s coming off a years in which he missed 14 games after suffering an elbow injury that required surgery. Previous to that, he had knee surgery and an AC sprain in his throwing shoulder in 2016. In fact, Roethlisberger has played in 16 games in a season just once since 2014. Why the Steelers would not bring in a serviceable back-up QB is mind-boggling and will come back to haunt them. We’ll be looking closely at going under the 9.5 wins this season for Pittsburgh.

In Major League Baseball, offshore sportsbooks have posted a season win totals and we like the over 34 for the Minnesota Twins.

This is a team that won 101 games last year, which translates to 37 wins in a 60 game season, and the roster has improved with the addition of 3B Josh Donaldson, catcher Alex Avila and pitchers Rich Hill and Homer Bailey. They also got Jake Odorizzi to accept a qualifying offer and we expect the right-handed ace to duplicate or better his stats from last season when he won 15 games with a 3.51 ERA.

Offensively, Minnesota led the league with 307 home runs last year and not playing at home will not be a factor this years since 170 of those dingers last year came on the road. What’s more, after breaking down the strength of schedules for all MLB teams, our Chief Baseball Handicapper Frank Drake discovered that Minnesota will play the second-easiest slate in the league, thanks to 12 games against the Tigers and Royals, two teams we expect to struggle, and 20 games versus the NL Central, which is going to be down last year. Under first-year manager Rocco Baldelli, the 2019 Twins won 40 of their first 60 games last season. Look for a similar record in the 60-game sprint that will make up the 2020 regular season.

Last week here on the Bondi Blog we gave out a free pick in golf and tabbed Bryson DeChambeau to win the Travelers Championship at 14-to-1 and he was in the hunt on Sunday before finishing sixth. The week before we nearly cashed in HUGE when we had Abraham Ancer at 60-to-1 and he finished second by 1 stroke, costing us a $3,000 payday on a $50 bet!

In fact, since the PGA restart, our top to win pick has finished 5th, 2nd and 6th. This week we have our golf picks locked and loaded for the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Below is one of our golf picks for FREE:

Hideki Matsuyama to win (18-1)

Hideki has only played in one event since the restart and he missed the cut, but his ball striking is as good as anyone on the PGA TOUR and over the last eight tournaments played he ranks sixth on the tour in greens in regulation, 18th in putting average, second in strokes gained off the tee, and 18th in total strokes gained. Detroit Golf Club has some of the biggest greens on tour and that will help with Matsuyama’s accuracy and be the difference this week.

You can get our entire PGA TOUR 7-Pack of Winners for by calling 1-877-332-0077 before 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Happy 4th of July!
